Trademark Policy

1. General

This Trademark Policy sets out the guidelines for how to use the IOTA trademarks when referring to projects in the IOTA ecosystem. The aim is to maintain the distinctiveness of the trademarks while also encouraging everyone to build new projects in the IOTA ecosystem.

Please review this Trademark Policy on a regular basis to keep up-to-date with any changes. We also reserve the right to revoke any permission and to change or restrict any use of the trademarks if we believe that such use is in violation of this policy or is harmful to the reputation of the IOTA ecosystem.

2. The IOTA Community logo

The IOTA community has created a logo to represent the IOTA community and the diverse projects within it. You are always welcome to use this logo in your IOTA community project to identify your project as part of the IOTA ecosystem and to show your support for the IOTA community.

3. Official trademarks of the IOTA Foundation

IOTA and the IOTA logo are trademarks of the IOTA Foundation. The IOTA Foundation has registered a number of trademarks to protect the names and logos of the main products and services in the IOTA ecosystem. These include IOTA, SHIMMER, SELV and FIREFLY.

You may use these trademarks when referring to the IOTA and Shimmer networks and other official products and services in the IOTA ecosystem. However, please follow the guidelines below when using these official trademarks.

3.1 General rules for using the official trademarks

When using the official trademarks of the IOTA Foundation, please remember:

You may use the trademarks in your own project in the IOTA ecosystem provided that you comply with this Trademark Policy. By using the trademarks, you confirm your acceptance of this policy.
The trademarks may not be used for any illegal, untruthful, misleading, derogatory or defamatory purposes or for any purpose that could negatively impact the reputation of the IOTA Foundation or the IOTA ecosystem.
When using the trademarks in your own projects, always include a trademark notice: “IOTA and the IOTA logo are trademarks of the IOTA Foundation.”
When using the trademarks in text, always use a capital letter at the beginning of the trademark, e.g. Shimmer. The IOTA word mark should always be written in all capital letters: IOTA.
Always use the trademarks as an adjective, e.g. the IOTA technology or the Firefly wallet.
Please don't use the trademarks in a possessive form, such as IOTA's wallet. Trademarks are adjectives that specify a product or service.
Only use the trademarks in a way that does not mislead consumers about the origin of the products or services. Unless you have received specific permission to do so, you may not use the trademarks in any way that suggests that you are an official partner of the IOTA Foundation or that your project has been endorsed by the IOTA Foundation.
Please don't try to register the trademarks as your own, e.g. as the name of your own project or company. Registering the IOTA Foundation's trademarks in your own name is unlawful.
Only use the trademarks in a way that does not mislead consumers about the origin of the products or services. Unless you have received specific permission to do so, you may not use the trademarks in any way that suggests that you are an official partner of the IOTA Foundation or that your project has been endorsed by the IOTA Foundation.

3.2 How to use the official trademarks

We encourage you to build your project as part of the IOTA ecosystem and you are welcome to use the official trademarks when referring to the IOTA network and other related technologies. Feel free to highlight that your project is built on the IOTA network or that you support the IOTA ecosystem. However, when choosing a name for your project, avoid giving the impression that your project has been endorsed by the IOTA Foundation or that it is part of the services or products offered by the IOTA Foundation. Be creative and use a name and logo that distinguishes your own project from other projects.

You can use the trademarks in both commercial (for-profit) and non-commercial (non-profit) projects, provided that your use of the trademarks does not in any way suggest that your project is the IOTA network or the IOTA token, or an official product or service offered by the IOTA Foundation.

3.2.1 Technical projects building on IOTA and Shimmer

If you are building a technical project, you may use the official trademarks to show that your project is built on the IOTA network when you are referring to the IOTA technology, the IOTA token or other official products or services provided by the IOTA Foundation.

Always remember to:

Add a link to the official IOTA website https://www.iota.org and add a trademark notice to show that these are trademarks of the IOTA Foundation.
Follow the trademark guidelines above and the brand style guide, as updated from time to time.

3.2.1 Other community projects

You can use the “IOTA Community” logo if you wish to support the IOTA ecosystem and spread awareness about IOTA and Shimmer, or you can use the official trademarks when referring to official networks and tokens or the technical products and services provided by the IOTA Foundation.

For example:

Creating a fan page or other information channel for the purpose of educating users about the IOTA network, stimulating developer or researcher discussions, and/or generally raising awareness.
Printing IOTA t-shirts, hats and other branded merchandise to be given away or sold in order to spread awareness about the IOTA ecosystem.
Designing and distributing marketing materials to advertise meet-ups, hackathons, conferences, developer workshops or other similar events.
Using the trademarks in articles and news about the IOTA ecosystem. We welcome you to write news articles, social media posts, or technical reports that discuss different projects in the IOTA ecosystem.
Cryptocurrency exchanges and other entities using the trademarks for activities involving commercial or non-commercial offerings of IOTA products, such as the IOTA token.

However, please remember to follow the brand guidelines and this Trademark Policy and to add a trademark notice to show that these are trademarks of the IOTA Foundation. Don't use the trademarks in a way that suggests that you are an official partner of the IOTA Foundation unless we have agreed to that separately.

3.3 What to avoid

In any case, please:

Do not use any of the trademarks in any way that could give a false impression that your project is the IOTA network or the IOTA token, or that it has been created or endorsed by the IOTA Foundation.
Do not use the trademarks as the name or logo of your own project, application or company.
Do not use modified versions of the trademarks. Maintaining a consistent brand appearance helps everyone recognize the IOTA ecosystem.

The IOTA Foundation does not make any express or implied warranties, including any warranties of non-infringement of any third-party intellectual property rights, and the IOTA Foundation shall not be liable for any claims relating to the use of the trademarks pursuant to this Trademark Policy.
